Chronodrift & Nocturne (2024)
for solo piano and electronics - 55'
Chronodrift refers to a technique of phasing where the piano (a flawed human) performs a consistent figuration prelude while the electronics sound precisely programmed timings that move around the pulse (machine). The interaction produces a succession of microgrooves that “drift” through variations in timing that move around the pulse in subdivisions of 56 and 60 parts, with the rhythmic process visible in the included graphs. The nocturnes contrast the rigid process that unfolds in the “drifting” movements and provide a looser, slower, and more intuitive unfolding.
Chronodrift & Nocturne was premeired by David Kirkland Garner at the University of South Carolina on October 9, 2024.
